Ask me all about Dr. Seuss!!! He has been the Author of the Month for February! We have been having a good time getting to know his books and his crazy characters! Today we used our SMART Board to visit Seussville. We played a rhyming game and took a spelling challenge. There are many cool games and activities to explore. You can visit Seussville at home by either visiting the favorite links on our class website or by going to We also kicked off our Community study with a visit from the Vet. Ask me all about March!!! We read a book today about March weather. We looked at today's weather graph and saw that it was stormy. We agreed that March looks like it is coming in like a lion, so we made lions to hang from our ceiling. They look so cool!!!!!!!!!!!
March comes in like a lion....ROAR. He rattles your windows and scratches at your door. He turns snow into mud then tromps across your floor!!! March comes in with winter clinging to his tail. He scatters sleet and even hail. Ask me all about book shopping!!! We went up to the library to check out the Book Fair. We used clipboards to make wish lists and wrote down the titles and authors of many fabulous books. We learned that the book fair is open for shopping all week, during the school day, and Friday night is Family Night!!! How fun!! Ask me all about Writer's Workshop!!!! Do you want to know how to hula hoop? Build a Lego car? Dance Ballet? Take care of a cat? Just ask us!!!! We are writing "How To" books. We have been so surprised at how much we can teach our friends. "How To" books are important Informational Texts because they give specific directions. We have to be very detailed and make sure that all of our steps are in the right sequence!!!! It is so much fun!
Ask me all about the bear cave!!! We have been learning about bears, as part of our non-fiction study, We have also been reading many old favorites such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Bear Snores On, and Three Snow Bears. It has been fun comparing the fictional and informational texts! To celebrate all of our hard work (and to have a fun place to curl up and read!) we built a bear cave in our classroom!!! We can go inside, turn on a lantern and read, read, read!!! (This afternoon, some friends even played a math game in it!!!) How cool!!!
Ask me all about our crazy teen numbers!!! We have been working on identifying, writing, and counting groups of teens. We have been learning many fun games to help us master these skills. Starting Monday be on the lookout for Math Games!!! The children will be able to check out their favorite games to bring home and share with you!!!! How fun!!!!
Ask me all about Non-fiction!!!! We started looking closely at informational texts....books that teach us things! We noticed that they have photographs, labels, maps, bold/highlighted words, questions, and even more!!! We love curling up in the tree house and learning new things!
We even tried our hand at informational texts in Writing!!! We wrote about what we know best...ourselves!!! Ask me all about our Writing Celebration! We just LOVE listening to each other read. Today we snuggled with our most LOVED stuffed friends for Reading and for our Writing Celebration. We sat like a perfect audience, complemented other writers, and made many personal connections! After, we clapped and cheered everyone's accomplishments. What a great day!!! Check out our Writing Slide Show!!! http://www.mrsbradysclass.com/writing-celebration.html Ask me all about my Writing!!!! Tomorrow we are going to celebrate our finished pieces!! Since it is Valentine's Day, we are going to bring in our most LOVED stuffed friend to share our stories with!!! They will even get to sit in the audience with us as we listen to each author share!!! How cool is that! Who knows???!!! Maybe they will read with us, too!
_ Ask me all about our Reading Strategies!!! We learned that all readers get "stuck like glue", but only Super Readers use their strategies to help them out! Our Beanie-Baby friends are helping us remember to... -Use our Eagle Eyes to check the picture -Use our Fish Lips to get our mouths ready -Stretch like a Snake to say all the sounds -Be a Chunky Monkey and look for words we know -Be a Tryin' Lion and go back and read it again -Sometimes the Silly Frog even says “Skip-it, Skip-it” and then go back We are such amazing Super Reader!!! Ask me all about the number 10!!! We have been singing the numbers 1-10, counting to find the number of items in a group, and finding different ways to make the number 10. Today we made a new class book based on Dr. Seuss' Ten Apples Up On top. We loved counting and stacking the apples on our heads!!! What a great way to reinforce our math concept!!! How fun!
Ask me all about Read Aloud Day! We had a special guest reader named Mrs. O'Donnell. She read a wonderful book to us called Upside Right, by G.J. Amato. It is all about getting active!!! We stretched and hopped and jumped and balanced on one foot!!! After we read the story we made books about the ways we love to move! Thank you so much for coming, Miss Lori!!! Ask me all about the new member of our classroom!!!! We filled our Warm Fuzzy Jar. To celebrate, we got a new class pet!!! It is a blue, fan-tailed beta fish! He likes to dance around his bowl and doesn't really act like a fish, so we decided to name him Tacky....just like one of our favorite characters!!!!
It is a big responsibility and we talked all about how to take care of a pet. We are going to take turns feeding Tacky and cleaning his bowl. How cool!!! Ask me all about writing with my senses!!! We have been adding sound and voice to our personal narratives. We used the document camera to put our writing up on the SMART board to take a closer look. We noticed how adding details can really "hook" a reader. Some of us are even adding speech bubbles!!! This week we will be choosing a piece of writing to "fancy up" and celebrate!!!
Ask me all about our new math game! We changed the rules to one of our favorite math games. We usually play Race to the Top with only one die. This week we started playing it with two!!! We are getting very good at adding two amounts and we are even trying new strategies, like counting on!
