Ask me all about writing! Today we revisited an old friend of ours named Pigeon. He is the main character in many of Mo Willems' famous books. We reread Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, but we listened to the story with our "writing ears". We wanted to see if Pigeon had good reasons for us to let him do what he wanted. We decided that he wasn't very good at defending his ideas. We learned that when writers are being persuasive, they have to prove that something is a good idea. If we are trying to solve a problem or convince someone to do something, it is important to tell WHY!!!!! Ask me all about Writer's Workshop!!! We are working on persuasive writing. Today we read the silly story, Can I have a Stegosaurus, Mom? Please? Can I?, by Lois Grambling. The main character is a little boy who tries to convince his mom that he needs a dinosaur. He comes up with many reasons. We laughed and laughed and came up with a few of our own! In our writing, we are solving problems, helping friends, and making wishes. We are describing details and using the word because to tell WHY!!! We are amazing writers!!!! Ask me all about our special Class Meeting!!! Today we met and talked about recess. We shared our thoughts about games we have been playing and how we have been treating our friends. We decided to make a big chart of reminders for the whole school!! We made a list of reminders and some fun ideas of things that we can do on the playground. After we closed our meeting we went to visit Mr. Hibbert. We asked if it was OK if we spoke to the whole school during lunch. We also asked if we could hang up signs about recess behavior. He said, "YES!" We are so proud of ourselves. In Writer's Workshop, we are learning about Persuasive Writing. We know that our pencils and crayons can be like magic wands...solving problems and helping others! We are so happy that we can share our hard work with all of our Warren School friends! Ask me all about Reader's Workshop! We are working on our fluency...how it sounds when we are reading! We have a new rule in our classroom!!! NO ROBOTS ALLOWED!!! We have been making a big chart of special hints to help us with our story voice. We have also been reading a lot of old favorites, including nursery rhymes. That way we can concentrate more on how our reading sounds! Ask me about our FLUENCY EYES!!!Ask me all about Humpty Dumpty! Did you know that his name has the "short u" sound in it? We are looking closely at the "short u" word family this week. We are also working on our fluency! Nursery Rhymes are great for practicing fluency because many of us already know all of the words! This way, we can concentrate on our story voice! This week we will be looking at many different versions of this favorite nursery rhyme. We will even learn about Humpty Dumpty's little sister!!! Ask me all about our class meeting. Today we read two great books and discussed what it means to be respectful. We shared ideas about what RESPECT looks like in our classroom, on the bus, in the lunchroom, and even on the playground. We made a big "Idea Web" to hang in our room to help us remember our important thoughts. We also talked a lot about using our words and a kind tone of voice! Everyone shared and everyone listened. What a great discussion!!! Ask me all about shared Reading!!! This week we have been enjoying different versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have had so much fun listening, comparing, and connecting these stories! Did you know that when you change the setting it can change the story?
The setting is where and when a story takes place. The three versions we compared were VERY different. We think the differences were because of the three settings...a cottage in the woods, a log cabin in the Wild West, and an igloo in the Arctic!!!! Read them and see if you agree!!! Ask me all about my math facts! We are working very hard on adding and subtracting to 5 (and working with numbers up to 10!) We have lots of games that we are playing, apps we are using, and books we are reading. Today we read The Mission of Addition by Brian P Cleary. We LOVED it! It is a fun rhyming book and the author didn't trick us at all!!! We are working hard, illustrating Math Fact Books. We started with subtraction facts and now we are working on addition. When I bring the books home, read and talk about them with me. You will be amazed at how smart I am!!!!! Ask me all about Shared Reading! Today we read Goldilocks and the Tree Bears (We are working on "short o" word families this week :) We discussed the choices Goldilocks made and we made connections. At one of our Literacy stations we even wrote about what we would do if we were Goldilocks. Our answers were fabulous!!! Ask me all about The Three Little Pigs! We have been comparing different versions of this old favorite as we work with "short i" word families. It has been so much fun to hear the different ways that authors retell the story. Today we shared The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, by Eugene Trivizas. We laughed and laughed and we loved the ending! Comparing literature is so much fun! Ask me all about Shared Reading! Today we read a very silly book on the SMART board called Did It Fit? After we read it once, we went back and looked closely for all of the "short i" word family words. We highlighted them with a special highlighter. Then we brainstormed even more words!!! During Reader's Workshop Stations we took turns reading and highlighting the words. We also cut and sorted -it and -in words!!! We are so smart!!! Ask me all about Math Workshop! Today we worked on our subtraction facts! We made them come alive!!! We started by using a special math tool called unifix cubes. We used them like puppets, acting our our math problems! Next we started to create our very own math books, illustrating each subtraction equation! It's a lot of work, but we are having fun teaching each other about subtraction!!!!
