Ask me all about Math Workshop!  Today many parents came in to see what the fun was all about! 
We started in the reading room with Mrs. B. and Mrs. Woodington. We read a wonderful book called Ten Flashing Fireflies, by Philomen Sturges.  As Mrs. Woodington read, we acted out the story with our own jars and fireflies.  We made number sentences and equations, we predicted amounts, and share our thinking!  How cool!!
Then we headed back to our classrooms for Math Workshop!  We played some old favorites games and worked on some new activities, but the whole time we used our math strategies and our math language!   It was so much fun!  What a great way to start the day!

Ask me all about The Little Red Hen!   We are enjoying different versions of the story and we even illustrated our own!  Today we listened to our favorite version so far, The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza), by Philemon Sturges.

This morning Mrs. Brady was at the door greeting us with a question..."Who will help me make the bread?"  We all said, "We will!"
We followed the recipe, step by step, and started our bread baking right away.  Then we worked together (It was really hard!) to make butter to go with our bread.  It was so fun to connect with the main character of the story!  We were just like the Little Red Hen...and the bread was so yummy!!!

Today we illustrated our own versions of this favorite tale.  We also talked about the lesson that the animals learned.  And tomorrow we are going to bake bread just like the Little Red Hen!!!  We promised to be helpful, though, because we all want a taste!!!
We have also been looking closely at word families with the "short e" sound in them....our word family house is growing and growing!!!

Ask me about nonfiction!!!  We have been writing informational texts!  This week we have been working on "All About" books.  We know that authors love to teach us things.  When an author is an expert at something, they can share the information by writing a book.
Today we talked all about how authors do research.  When they want to learn more about a subject they look online,  read books, and  do interviews.  We spent some extra time in the library this morning researching on the computers.   Then we came back and wrote, wrote, wrote.  We are amazing writers!!!
At the end of Writer's Workshop Mrs. Brady made a quick video of our work with the app Animoto.  Take a peek at how hard we worked!!!

Ask me all about Shared Reading!  We interacted with a silly story on the Smart Board.  We had to look closely at all of the words because they all had the "short a" sound in them.
Then at our Word Work station we had to build word family houses!!!  We had to sort words from the -ap family and the -at family.  It was hard!!!  We used the word bricks to build houses!!!  We are so smart!
Many of us were also working with word families on Lexia!  We are so busy!

Ask me all about Shared Reading!  We have been enjoying the story Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina.  It is a wonderful tale about a peddler selling his caps.  We love the repeating lines and we have even been acting out the story!
This week in word work we are talking about Word Families!  Word families are groups of words that have the same pattern.  We have been looking closely at "short a" words.  We started with the -ap family!   We have had so much fun making and breaking words!

Ask me all about our Twitter chat today!!!  We talked to a teacher from a school in Ireland.  We learned that they do not have school on St. Patrick's Day.  They have a big parade to watch and march in!!!  It was cool learning how other people celebrate the holiday....

Ask me all about our Writing Celebration!!!  
We have worked so hard on our "How To" books....so we spent two days celebrating them!!!  First we shared our special "How To Movie" with our fourth grade buddies and read them all of our informational books.  Then we celebrated with Mrs. Birdsall's Multi-age class!!!  We shared our movie and then we  got to look at some first grade "How To" books.  It was cool to see the kind of writing we will be able to do next year!!!

Today we made a list of words that writers use when they are teaching someone something.  They are words that you may not find in a Life Story...

We had an amazing workshop today!!!

Ask me all about Learning Stations today!  In addition to predicting the weather with Lions and Lambs and practicing our lower case letters, we were making lists, just like our parents do!!!

In the kitchen area we were writing grocery lists and at our building station we were labeling our houses and making lists of building supplies !
We are amazing!!!  Even when we play we work!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today we continued telling math stories to match an equation.  We used words like "first, next, joined them, came along, and altogether"!!!  We had so much fun taking turns and creating math problems!
