Ask me all about the Alphabet!!! Did you know there are 26 letters? Did you know that they go in a special order? The alphabetic principle is the understanding that there are systematic and predictable relationships between written letters and spoken sounds. We acquire alphabetic knowledge in a sequence that begins with letter names, then letter shapes, and finally letter sounds. We learn letter names by singing songs such as the "Alphabet Song," playing games and by reciting rhymes.
